Australia-Korea Webinar on Women in STEM

The Australian Embassy Seoul and the Center for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology is hosting a Women in STEM Webinar, part of a series of events celebrating the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Australia and Korea.

 

Australian and Korea are making significant efforts to address gender equity in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.  This webinar will discuss experiences and challenges, and explore the role of international connections in improving STEM outcomes in both countries.

Introducing the speakers:

Professor Lisa Harvey-Smith, Australian Government Women in STEM Ambassador

Professor Lisa Harvey-Smith is the Australian Government’s Women in STEM Ambassador and a Professor of Practice?at The University of New South Wales. Her role is to increase the participation of women and girls in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) studies and careers in Australia by driving systemic and cultural change.?As an astrophysicist, her research interests are in?the birth and death of stars, cosmic magnetic fields and supermassive black holes. Professor Harvey-Smith serves on the Australian Space Agency’s Advisory Group and previously led a team of 30 scientists and engineers at CSIRO developing the Square Kilometre Array – a next-generation radio telescope that will survey billions of years of cosmic history.?She?is the author of the popular science books?When Galaxies Collide,?The Secret Life of Stars?and?Under the Stars: Astrophysics for Bedtime.

 

Dr Ahn Hye-yeon, President, Center for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology (WISET)

As the President of the Korea Center for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology (WISET), Dr. Ahn Hye Yeon leads organisational efforts to build capacity of women in STEM fields in Korea and support its enabling environment. Dr. Ahn has an extensive background in the IT industry of over 30 years, with particular expertise in cyber security. Prior to becoming WISET President, Dr. Ahn served as a Vice-President in SecureSoft and Fasoo.com, as well as a Research Engineer in Samsung SDS earlier in her career. Dr. Ahn holds a Doctorate Degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Massachusetts, in the United States, as well as Master’s Degree and Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics from Ewha Womans University.

Dr Lee Myung Sun, Director, Ewha Institute for Leadership Development

Dr. Lee Myung Sun is a professor of Health Convergence at Ewha Womans University and currently a director of Ewha Institute for Leadership Development. Dr. Lee is a former president (Vice-Minister level) at the Korean Women’s Development Institute, and a former advisor at the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and Ministry of Gender Equality and Family. She formerly served on the Council for Employment Policy Consultation of the Ministry of Employment and Labor and as vice chairwoman of the Committee for Social and Human Sciences of the Korean National Commission for UNESCO. Dr. Lee obtained her Ph.D. in public health science from the School of Medicine at Yonsei University. Her main interests include public health policies, safety education, occupational health, and gender issues in public health.

 

Jade Bujeya, 2019 New Colombo Plan Scholar to Sogang University; Consultant, JDS Australia

Jade Bujeya an early-career STEM professional from Victoria.  She is presently studying a Master of Data Science at La Trobe University in combination with part-time work with JDS Australia, an IT consultancy. In 2019, Jade studied at Sogang University in Seoul as a New Colombo Plan Scholar, and completed an internship at the Korean Centre for Artificial Photosynthesis.
